Background of the study
The integration of robotic automation in healthcare is transforming the administrative functions within hospitals, offering potential improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness (Akinwunmi & Oladapo, 2023). Robotic process automation (RPA) in hospital administration, such as in patient scheduling, billing, and medical records management, has been hailed as a promising solution to reduce administrative burdens, minimize human error, and streamline processes (Okonkwo & Eze, 2024). Hospitals in Jigawa State, like many parts of Nigeria, face challenges related to inefficient administrative procedures, resource constraints, and the lack of skilled personnel to manage complex manual processes. The introduction of robotic automation is seen as a potential remedy for these issues, improving the overall service delivery.
In Nigeria, while the adoption of automation in healthcare is still in its nascent stages, several hospitals have begun exploring its potential benefits. Robotic automation is particularly relevant in administrative tasks, where it can support high-volume, repetitive tasks that consume significant time and resources (Ahmed et al., 2025). Hospitals in Jigawa State have shown interest in these technologies, but the widespread adoption remains limited due to factors such as financial constraints, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to change within the workforce (Aliyu & Hassan, 2023).
This study seeks to assess the impact of robotic automation on hospital administration in Jigawa State, specifically exploring how automation has affected operational efficiency, staff workload, and service delivery.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits of robotic automation in hospital administration, many hospitals in Jigawa State continue to face operational inefficiencies and high administrative costs due to traditional manual processes. There is limited empirical research on the impact of robotic automation in these hospitals, particularly in terms of improving service delivery and reducing operational costs. Without understanding the potential benefits and challenges associated with automation, hospitals in Jigawa State may miss opportunities for improved efficiency and healthcare delivery (Sulaimon et al., 2024).
Objectives of the study
To investigate the impact of robotic automation on administrative processes in hospitals in Jigawa State.
To assess the extent to which robotic automation has improved operational efficiency and service delivery in Jigawa State hospitals.
To identify the challenges faced by hospitals in Jigawa State in implementing robotic automation.
Research questions
How has robotic automation impacted administrative processes in hospitals in Jigawa State?
To what extent has robotic automation improved operational efficiency and service delivery in Jigawa State hospitals?
What challenges do hospitals in Jigawa State face in implementing robotic automation?
Research hypotheses
Robotic automation has significantly improved administrative processes and operational efficiency in hospitals in Jigawa State.
Robotic automation has led to a reduction in administrative costs and improved service delivery in hospitals in Jigawa State.
Resistance to change and lack of technical expertise are significant barriers to the effective implementation of robotic automation in Jigawa State hospitals.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study will focus on hospitals in Jigawa State that have implemented or are in the process of implementing robotic automation. The research will be limited to administrative functions, excluding clinical automation. Data will be gathered from hospital administrators, staff, and patients. The study may be constrained by the availability of data on the implementation of automation in hospitals.
